I have an 8 month old colt. He is a Buckskin with perfect makings and coloration. The person i have brought him off told me he was 1st cross QH however im having trouble seeing it. He was very malnourished and full of worms and he also has his winter coat so its making it hard for me to confirm his breed. Im in Australia so i need information relivent to here. Can i have DNA testing to confirm his breed lines and how much does this cost. i am not interested in breeding him i will have him gelded once his condition picks up and im confident he will handle the operation but if he does prove to be a 1st cross QH i will try to register him. He has an old injury to his eye that has left a scar and blinded him in that eye will this hinder having him registered? Any information on DNA testing and how its done and how much it costs would be very much appreciated!

  1. go to a equine specialest and ask... theres is away.. but they will also need a little blood ample from the mother or father... if none alive or by... its gunna cost more but they can figure it out!..

cost about 850-1500... usally that can determine it but the skul struckture/ hoofs/tail/mane/years/ect

  2. best person to ask is a vet and everyone will probably say that! as for registering him with the scar and blind in one eye i dont think that'll have any effect on getting him registerd they'll just put it down on the markings page i think.ive no long ago brought a welsh registered section d mare and her papers are just one page in her passport not like years ago when u had a proper certificate!but a registered horses papers have your horse then like a famliy tree going back through the parents and that so wouldnt u need that info to get him registered? i dont really know much about it im probably wrong!i bet its not cheap to get DNA testing done and they probably can do that they can do anything these days!

  3. The DNA for registry (that I'm familiar with) is done through UC Davis.

(I'm a bit lost with 'first cross QH'?)  The test used to run $40- $50.

It consists of pulling a dozen or so hairs from the mane and tail, with the root attached, putting the sample in a sterile container and shipping to the lab.

If your colt's sire and dam have been DNA tested and the results are on record with whatever registry, then yes, his parentage can be verified.

No, his scarring is not an issue for registry.

  4. I have heard alot about UC Davis vet. genetic lab:

    http://www.vgl.ucdavis.edu/services/inde...

I have never used the service myself.

Contact your vet, they may have someone that they use.

  5. vet and dna such as hair or saliva
