Well there are the following types

A address record

MX  mail exchange record

NS  nameserver record(s)

SOA  start of authority record

TXT  text records for some specific dat.

these are the most basic ones

I guess the A and NS are the most important - nothing will work without those two! But then you need all except the TXT and MX records! (you need the MX if you want MAIL to work!)
