Hi am deciding between a bluie fronted amazon or a hans macaw am not sure which would make the cuddliest best pet. As i want to harness train it and take it for drives, to the park, and lots of cuddles and scratches was told by breeder to go for a hans and other breeder said amazon but neither breeeders have had them as pets so i would like to ask someone who has had them as pets. Thanks

  1. They aren't cuddly, and Macaws can live for 125 years.  So I don't know if "good pet" actually applies.

They can be tamed, but they are still wild animals.  And you'll have to will your pet to someone when you die.

  2. yes if they are properly trained, handfed and handled daily. each bird is different you may find a hans macaw that is the cuddliest bird alive but you may find another hans macaw that only bites/ I would get any one as long as it is handfed and socialized if both are spend time with each of them and see which is interested in you.

  3. Well any bird is a good pet but I wouldn't recommend the mynahs  it has gooy pooy

  4. If you are a first time bird owner, I would really start with a Blue Front Amazon.  He will have to have been hand fed. Are you sure a dog wouldn't be better, you want to harness, it take it for drives, this is not everyday bird nature. You will really have to wait quite awhile to make sure you are not going to scare the bird.  Birds are not like Dogs or Cats. Unless you have the right Cockatoo for cuddling. Even that is not a guarantee. Seems to me you are asking a lot from a bird.

  5. they can be but are 1 OWNER birds and will bond greatly with 1 person! BUT ALSO IF NOT SOCIALIZED THEY CAN BE AGGRESSIVE AND POTTENITIALY DANGEROUS

  6. id say the macaw, you need to do the research yourself and handle both of these birds before choosing one. both of these breeds need at least 3 hours of socialization daily... do the research these birds are lifetime companions and once you get one you have it untill you die...

i have an amazon and a lot of experiance with conures...

  7. Hi,

I am a breeder and I have both of them as pets. The Hans is about the size of a Conuer, so they are a good size to start out with. Get a baby and spend as much time as you can with him for the first year. They can be nippie so don't let him start that habbit.

An Amazon is a good bird that adaptes well to changes. But make sure you get a female zon. A male can get out of hand at about 3 years old.

A BFA or a Hans are both great birds for beginers. The BFA is the better talker as all Amazons are. But they are more moody then the Hans.

He must trust you to allow you to put a harness on him. This is the best harness http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CaNOsb1fs... It is the one I use on all of my birds.

If you have any other questions, dorp me a note and I will help you.

  8. If you don't have any experience with birds, a macaw of ANY type (or any large parrot) isn't for you.

Start with a small bird, such as a parakeet (budgie), cockatiel, caique, or Meyer's Parrot.

Go to a reputable breeder who actually HAS had one as a pet. Until one has had a pet bird of a particular species, they have no business selling you one. There's no substitute when it comes to personal experience.

Also, do tons of research about what it takes to care for a bird, as well as the potential expense of feeding one. My bird's species requires 80% of its diet to be fruits and vegetables, of which greater than 90% gets wasted (all birds waste that much because of their evolution and the mechanics of their eating). My estimate is it costs a minimum of $30/mo to feed and house him-- more if you buy toys rather than make them. If you have someone else clip its wings, or dremel its toenails (I do both myself), it gets even more expensive.
