  1. The purpose of a water pump it to circulate water. This is not necessary but its recommended to keep from having dead spot (lack of water flow). Air pump does just that...provides air which is a must all life. Now you can get a power head which is a does both. You can attach an air line that will put air into water via air bubbles and well as circulate water. Some power heads actually sweep back and forth. I would go this route as air pumps tend to be noisy and most often need to be repaired. It doesn't cost much but its annoying. Get a powerhead and kill two birds with one stone.

  2. The answer is both yes and no.

Without an air pump/water pump your fish (hopefully few) will survive and thrive just fine.

A water/air pump puts air in the water.  This will enable you to put more fish in the water per liter.

If you have too many fish is the tank under either case it will make it hard for the fish to survive.  They wouldn't all die at once though.  Likely the weaker ones will die off until there's sufficient air for the remained to live comfortably.

An air pump will put the air in faster.

  3. like everyone else says it realy depends

  4. The smaller the tank the more important having a filter is.

The filter processes waste ammonia and circulates the water to exchange oxygen. If that doesn't happen your fish eventually die.

Some fish (like betta and goldfish) can survive longer in appaling water conditions, but it doesn't mean it's good for them.

  5. Yes if you want oxygen for your fishes to breath. Though it depends on what fish you have

  6. Yes. Specifically you need to get a water filter.

  7. Depends on the type of fish! What do you have in there???

  8. Not really, if you don't buy a water pump you will have to clear the water and clean the tank you self. every 3-2 days (to keep the water fresh)

But, It is worth getting the pump so, you'll have to clean the tank less often.

I you get a pump make sure the fish won't get stuck in it- mine did :(.
