  1. You do not need a land line phone to get Internet service, unless if you choose to have dialup internet service. You do not need a phone for dialup, though, just a phone jack. Another option is getting high speed cable Internet, which uses coaxial and Ethernet cables, instead of phone lines. Cable Internet is 10x faster than dialup.

  2. not if you have cable you can get service through them also check around there are some companies that offer a satellite based wireless internet service. the equipment is expensive to buy but some places let you rent it as part as the package

  3. there are three types of internet service;

    one, the older dial up, means YES you need a line to use it. It works by actually dialing the other computers just like one phone dials another;

    the second one is by cable, like Comcast. then, no you dont; they provide service thru a co axil able and its independant of the phone system, a whole differant system; the way to understand this is by looking at the little white outlet that leads to tradtional phones, and then look at the round outlet in your walls, that hooks up to your tv, thats co axil.

    the third is DSL, thats provided thru the tradtional lines of a telephone, but it split, like splitting a hair downward from top to bottom and getting two hairs out of one;

      you can then pay for using both (hairs) meaning, youre buying both the voice servcie AND the high speed internet, from your phone company, like AT/T;  or you pay to use only one hair, not the voice part,  but the high spd intrnet part.

    The use of one (hair) here in IL. is about 40$ month, if you have 'stand alone' DSL. If you have both the voice service and the DSL internet, then it about 65$ for both..

    hows that for a long- winded 'no'.?

  4. no, the only internet service that needs a phone line is dial-up. Verizon, earthlink, and I think qwest offers DSL with out an active phone line. It's called bare DSL

  5. You can use cable internet or a dial up service if you want to.

    It just depends on what your budget is.

    I like the fast connection of cable internet and I use Vonage for my phones.

    I also have a cell phone for backup, just in case the internet goes out in my area and I am left with no phones.

    Our local phone company is now offering dsl only without the phone service.  Maybe you could look into that..

  6. Alot of people will recommend cable to be able to get internet without a landline, which is not always the best deal. You can get DSL from the phone company without having a landline. Even though it is more convenient and accessible price wise to have both even if it is just the basic line. But yes dont be fooled you can have DSL with no landline.
