Grimace is Ronald McDonald's retarded best friend, and he is male.

Grimace is male.  Birdie the Early Bird wasn't introduced until several years after Grimace and she was lauded as the first female character in McDonaldland in which Grimace was already a character.  Although lacking male genitalia, Grimace has always been referred to as "he" by McDonalds but maybe only because in the 1970's it wasn't so cool yet to talk about gender except in the classic dichotomy of male/ female and it's possible Grimace could be transexual, especially being purple, and just ran out of funds to complete the hormonal and surgical s*x change, which was common then.
