  1. cory catfish they are cool and take care of alge

  2. chinese algae eaters take forever to get big. you might be thinking about plecos, which can get big.

20 gal tanks needs 1 or 2 algae eaters, or a lot of plants.

a couple of snails will become a lot of snails.

  3. if you dont have live plants

get some apple snails they grow realy big

  4. I'd go with the snails, I have 4 briggs snails and I love them. I have 1 gold, 1 purple, 1 ivory, and 1 olive. They only breed if you have both male and female.

Cories will peck at algea but they require flake food and a sinking pellet food like shrimp pellets, also the need at least 6 to feel secure.

A bristle nose pleco would be a better option IMO.

  5. snail reporduce like crazy! dont make the same mistake i did, i got 3 snails, 1 female, 2 males, and in a couple of months i had an over population of snails. i have someting called a coradora (?sp) catfish, and its small and its friendly toward the guppies i have. it cleans the tank and im algae (and now snail) free!

  6. Ok, not all algae eaters get big. The common pleco does, and most ppl get that not knowing they need a bigger tank. You could get a school of otocinculsese or a bristle nose pleco. Otos only get 1.5 inches and bristle nose plecos only get 5 inches, so either one of those could live in your tank with the guppies. But if you want snails over fish it depends. The best would be apple snails, because they will only breed if you lower the water so they can lay eggs above the water level, so your not gonna get baby snails if you get a few of these types.

The common apple snail. It gets the size of a baseball and you could have 2 in that tank with the guppies/platys. Or mystery snails, a smaller version of an apple snail. They get the size of a golf ball. You can have 3-4 in there. You can have snails and a small species of apple snail! Not all algae eaters get big!

    : )

Edit:Apple snjails will eat live healthy plants, mystery snails will only eat dead and dyding plants, not healthy plants.

  7. It might be in your best opinion to get some snails to keep the tank clean.  So, yes it'd be wise.

  8. I'm more than sure snails would be great. But, you should get some Peppered Corydoras, too. ( i have one) they're schooling fish so you might want to get 3 or 4. I heard they love to cuddle! I think seeing them doing that would be so cute! =]

  9. Snails wouldn't hurt anything but, if algae is your concern they won't be enough for a 20 gallon.  Try getting 3-4 peppered corydoras...they are beutieful bottoom feeding catfish, and will not get too big.  they will also help take care of the algae
