In the United States. . .do you think when "the draft" existed that our country enjoyed more discipline amongst our youth; a sense of MORE honor to our country; and overall respect for ONE ANOTHER??? I always felt it should have been applicable to BOTH sexes, too !!!

  1. Not necessarily, but I will entertain the thought that maybe it had an impact.

I appreciate your willingness to give me something to think about.

  2. R U kiddn?

  3. No...we had a draft in the 60's.  The c**p kids are pulling today is child's play compared to what they did back then.  I support the all volunteer military.  It works, and every one who is there, joined on their own accord.

    USAF Veteran

  4. Nope, it actually had the opposite effect.

In WW ll, there was no opposition to the war, so the draft had no problems.

In Korea, we really didn't draft all that many people, we just recalled the reservist from WW ll.

Vietnam, was the first war, there was public opposition to, that we had a draft going.

But even during Vietnam, less than 6% of those draft eligible were drafted.

And even drafting so few, caused a decline in respect and discipline.

To many people believe that a draft is conscription,

Where everyone has to serve for a set amount of time in the military.

That's not how a draft works,

A draft does not make the military larger.

It only allows the military to force someone to enlist, if there are not enough volunteers.

In either case, the size of the military, is set by Congress.

  5. Even if it did apply to both sexes it would be unjust since the US avoids putting women into direct combat positions.  An unequal draft caused a very undisciplined response here once before -- the NY draft riots in the 1850s.  They started over discontent that a person could buy their way out of the draft for $300 which was a lot of money back then.

  6. No.  The military ended up with people they did not want and who did not want to be there.  AWOLs were a big problem.  Lots of men fled to Canada to avoid the draft.  People who were forced to serve came out bitter because they lost two years of their lives.

There is no such thing as the "good old days."

  7. Whoa.

The fingers were hot to tear you down from the title since the draft doesn't apply to women.

    Don't agree, but rock on.

  8. Turkey has the draft, England had it, and both Belgium and the Netherlands only recently stopped it. Are these nations any more disciplined?

It just forces people to go to war on fear of prison and fear of being called a traitor.

  9. No, not everyone can adjust to military life. Respect, discipline and common sense is taught by the Mothers and fathers of the children. It all starts in the Home. The Family is where the children learns about life. The military Teaches the art of warfare. The Code of Conduct, The way the military operates. I have two draft cards in my collection that has a woman's name on it from the Vietnam War Era. FYI.
