I am wondering to spend the extra on a reciever, because what i am hearing is in order to get HD audio you need to run my PS3 throung the reciever bact to the tv. But I dont want to take a chance on loosing video quality that way. I rather run my ps3 straight to the tv and use a optical for sound.

  1. Pretty much everything that is produced on DVD these days is still only 5.1 every disc cover will tell you what sound format the movie or program is in.  In general though 5.1 is the norm.

  2. Because it's digital - you wont loose any video quality by running the video through 3,4,5.. different devices.

(This text I type will go through 5 different switches/hubs/routers, then to Yahoo, then to your computer. How much "quality" is lost? None)

I like the idea of being able to hear un-compressed audio. But frankly - I know Hollywood is NOT going to spend too much time mastering the audio on movies to really take advantage of it.

But ... look into the Onkyo 505/605/705 receivers. These things are about $500 and DO handle the un-compressed audio formats. So you dont really have to spend too much to get this feature.

  3. ALL Blu-Rays have to have a Dolby Digital 5.1 track on them (for people like you who don't yet have the high definition audio systems) so don't stress.  As long as you have an HDTV, you will greatly enjoy Blu-ray.

To the poster below me.....I hope Best Buy fires you, because you know little about High Def or Home Theater in General.

Let's review:  PS3 supports all High Def sound formats.  It supports Dolby True HD and DTS Master Audio.  It does NOT bitstream those formats directly to your receiver.  Instead, it takes care of the decoding itself and sends the translated PCM (Pulse Code Modulation) 5.1 or 7.1 directly to your receiver.  Guess what?  That is a good thing because only the newest receivers can directly decode Dolby True HD or DTS MA, but even receivers from many years ago can decode PCM in 5.1 or 7.1.  So, Sony just saved everyone from having to buy a new receiver.  So, how does that not count as supporting the High Def formats?

Oh, your lack of knowledge does not end there.   DTS and Dolby are different companies and DTS HD is NOT High Def Dolby.  Dolby True HD is High Def Dolby.  Are you sure you work at Best Buy?

Finally, there are lots of other receivers that can decode Dolby True HD and DTS MA.  Onkyo makes 4, Denon makes 2, Yamaha makes 2 and there are others.  Just because Best Buy doesn't sell them doesn't mean they do not exist.  One of the Onkyo ones is only $600.

So, you should just be quiet since you have no idea what you are talking about.  You are going to mislead the poor poster who probably thought you knew something.

  4. If you mean do blu ray discs have 5.1 audio as well as high def audio, then the answer is not all of them. I have come across a few discs that gave no option for regular 5.1 dolby digital. Using a ps3 as a player they still played through a regular 5.1 receiver just without center channel. Voices came out from left and right channel but sounded much more open and dynamic than regular 5.1.

  5. Most can go up to 7.1 dolby surround.

  6. If you want to get HD audio and video quality, you have to spend $500 and up for an HDMI switching receiver.

  7. The PS3 doesn't have high def sound. Major mistake people make. The only thing that i now supports DTS-HD which is high def dolby is a denon receiver  which runs you about 2,000. You wont lose video quality. Make sure you run good HDMI cables such as Monster brand.
