Question:

DOES BEEF IN SOUP SOMEHOW AFFECT THE VEGETABLES?

I'm a vegetarian. I am very strict about what I eat. As in, nothing that has touched meat. But, my mom made soup that was my favorite before I turned veg. If I ate around the meat would it affect the veggies? It's not meat broth either.

  1. Obviously you are not a vegetarian if you have to ask this question. Something had to die to make that soup. You should be ashamed.

  2. the fat/salt from the meat wud saturate the veggies. if u cook it with meat, its meat ♥

  3. yes. the meat is soaked in the "non meat broth" and then in the rest of the soup.

tell your mom not to make that soup since it has MEAT in it!

  4. There would definitely still be beef residue. The beef would  touch the veggies and the broth and therefore not be acceptable by your current standards. Honestly, if it's enough of a difference to effect the taste, it's enough of a difference to add meat to what you're eating. (If everything else in the recipe is the same, what other than meat could be the difference?)

See if Mom will make it without the beef in it. I'd skip the fake beef, since you'll definitely be able to tell it's fake.

  5. It is not vegetarian the juice from the beef/meat is still floating in the soup...sorry

  6. meat is infused thru out the whole soup!

  7. Well yes. You must know of course that the cooked meat has released it juices (animal blood) into the soup broth. You are only kidding yourself if you think this is still a vegetable soup.

  8. Sweetie, the meat juices will be mixed with the veggies don't eat it. I'd suggest using your mom's recopy for soup and add chunks of Boca Sausage (soy sausage) in place of the meat. You can buy veggie soup stock or make your own, if you want a thicker soup.

  9. It's hard to be a vegetarian when you live at home and your family is not supportive of what you are trying to do.

"Eating around' the meat, is not exactly 'vegetarian' in practice, but if that is the best you can do in your situation, I suppose it is the lesser of evils.

Get some vegeatarian cookbooks, there are hundreds of them, and try cooking for yourself.

  10. Since you state that you are "very strict" about what you eat and that you are a vegetarian - you already know the answer.

Meat is touching and floating around the vegetables - very much touching.  The juices from the meat when heated clearly have mixed into the soup.

    Choice is yours.

  11. It's up to you where you draw your own line.

Eating soup that has meat in it isn't really consistent with vegetarianism, and most vegetarians would refuse to eat it.

  12. It certainly improves the flavor of the soup, as you have clearly noted. You will have to decide between your palate and your principles; no one else can do it for you.

  13. If you cook it with meat, it isn't vegetarian. Just like gravy isn't vegetarian because it's made with meat juice and such. Maybe you could help your mom find a way to make this recipe without the meat in it (you said there is no meat broth, so you could just have her omit the meat next time).

Personally, I've been veg for so long that meat of any sort in my food (like broth or anything) makes me sick...

  14. The vegetables are simmered in the broth and they soak in it so you would be consuming the fats/salt that's in the meat. :)

  15. A vegetarian would not eat soup with meat in it.

  16. Meat is made of proteins, amino acids and as all things are has a molecular makeup. Those meat molecules are dispersed throughout the soup she is making. So yes, you are ingesting meat (even in the broth as the veggies have been bathed in it).

FYI: you can buy really great veggie broth cubes or veggie broth at natural food stores and use that as a broth and make your soups separately. It's really easy and delicious.
