DOVE sleek styling cream. How much is enough?

How do styling creams work? The one that I'm using now is to help keep hair straight after it's styled. It says to only apply a small amount evenly through the hair, but is a thin layer enough to do the job?

Too much could weigh your hair down and make it flat. Use what the bottle says and add more if you need it later on.
