DOes using hot water with my laundry waste energy?

When setting the settings on my washer does using warm water waste uneeded energy or does it matter?

  1. yes, i use cold water detergent, and then just run it on the cold cycle (on the washer's in my dorm that's the bright colors cycle), and my clothes come out just as clean as anyone elses

  4. The water needs to be at least 60 F to activate the detergent.  Very cool water wastes detergent and generally doesn't clean well. Generally warmer water requires less detergent.  Hot water may damage some fabrics.  So, as usual, there are trade-offs.  Water at about 85 F should work well for just about any laundry load.

  5. It is a waste if you use warm water to rinse. Using a hot fill for the main wash is OK.

  6. Not unless you don't need it.
