Answer to my compressor shut-off noise:
could be a broken spring inside the compressor and would only make a noise as the compressor stops. nothing you can do about it. you would need to break open the compressor, replace the spring, weld it back, then charge it up again with refrigerant.

This begs the questions: Will this cause the unit to self-destruct? If so, how soon? What may be the approximiate cost or time for a technician to perform the fix you offered? I suspect that repair may cost almost as much as a new refrigerator.
