DRS a doubt for the Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix: Formula 1 News
Most Formula 1 teams have expressed their concerns over the use of the innovative Drag Reduction System (DRS) during the Monaco Grand Prix, which will take place on May 29, 2011. There are concerns that the free use of the system may compromise the safety
of the drivers in Monaco, which is not considered to be an ideal track for the use of the adjustable rear wing.
The Monaco circuit comprises of tight corners and there is no long straight where the straight-line speed of a car comes into play. Overtaking has always been difficult at the venue, which makes the grid position very much important for the drivers. Considering
this, the driver will try and give it their best shot during the qualifiers and the over-use of DRS might cause an accident.
There hasn’t been any final decision made on the banning of the system during the Monaco GP by the sport’s governing body FIA. However, talks will be held between the teams and FIA after the Turkish GP in order to make a decision on the use of the rear wing
technology.
The introduction of DRS has been hailed by majority of the teams and drivers, as it has made the sport more interesting and challenging. Although most of the credit has been given to the Pirelli tyres for making overtaking possible, Mercedes’ driver Nico
Rosberg rated the rear wing innovation to be the best.
The German driver stated, “The rear wing – best idea ever probably, for this sport. No? And tyres also. Pirelli, everybody has been criticising them, but they have made our sport spectacular. So that is cool.”
He further added, “There is nobody saying we are having boring races. There is overtaking left, right, and centre - everywhere. So, they have done a really, really good job and that is the most important thing that needs to be highlighted.”
There was a lot of criticism on Formula 1 racing in the past couple of years. Many experts and former drivers rated the racing as dull, saying that the fans want the teams to be fighting in the race. Grid position was very much important last year, as the
teams who were doing well in the qualifiers were hard to overtake in the race.
