I've noticed recently that my dog has excessively dry skin. The scratching in unbearable and I feel so bad. Ive tried bathing him with a moisturizing shampoo and It didn't help any. I'm trying to avoid excessive bathing that's why I haven't tried again. Does anyone know of anything you can whip up in your kitchen or something you have around the house that can help this?

  1. For dry skin, try using Linatone Oil mixed in the food, it works well for dry skin.

Change your shampoo to a vet product, they have a medicated foam shampoo that assists with keeping skin infections down and helps with itching skin.

I  wonder if your dog has sensitive skin and the products you are using are making her worse. Your dog may have an allergy to flea treatment, give your dog Brewers Yeast and Garlic tablets, fleas don't like the smell/taste and tend to leave the dog alone.  Spray the bed with cedar oil, again this is a natural flea repellent

Otherwise, think about your dogs diet, lots of dogs have allergies to chicken or beef, and most kibbles have corn additives so check out the fine print and consider trying something completely different.   If none of this works, try another vet, maybe yours isn't picking something up, vets can be infallible too.

  2. There are a couple of things to look at when a dog has really dry skin, He may have a food allergy - have you changed his diet lately? Or he may have an inhalant allergy related to the time of year. There is a skin disease that affects dogs (people too) called seborrhea that is treated in different ways depending on the type of seborrhea. My dog had it and was treated with medicated baths and medicated sprays, He also had to do a short course of antibiotics as his skin got pretty sore from all the scratching. We also changed his food (the previous food manufacturer had changed their formula and we weren't sure he wasn't reacting to that). I hear that adding Omega 3 and 6 oils to the diet can help the skin. I would check with your vet.

  3. You are correct not to bath your dog to many times as that can cause dry skin. I would suggest keeping the area clean and free from debri and maybe applying a baby moisturiser to it. In the furure dry a shampoo thats intended for dry skin such as epi-soothe or allermyl (both available from your vets).

If the area becomes sore, itchy or infected then contact your vet.

  4. try changing her food because too much maize can cause dry skin, also try putting olive oil on her food. Nutro is a good complete pet food

  5. My dog also gets dry skin so what we do is try not to bath him often only when he gets dirty. Also on the patches of dry skin rub some cooking oil it helps a lot our dogs dry skin has almost gone now :)

  6. How often you bath your dog?

Only bath him once a week in you are staying in a hot weather country and bath him once a month if vice verse.  Normally dog dry skin start because dog owners bath them too frequent.

If the situation do not improve, go to vet to get some ointment and rub on your dog body. After sometime it will recover.

  7. What are you feeding him?  Food affects skin.  If you are feeding a low fat, grain based diet they you need to change to a higher fat based diet..  Also instead of bathing, start brushing,  Brushing will stimulate the oil glands to produce and distribute their oils. You can put a little creme rinse (2Tbs) per pint and spray a little on the hair coat when you brush to add moisture. If the dog is outside all the time, the sun will cause the hair to bleach and dry out too.  Finally the dryness and the scratching can easily be a medical issue.  The most common one is hypothyroidism.  If this continues, talk to your vet.
