Question:

DSL filters w/ cable?

We are having lots of problems with static on our phone line. I am wanting to know if DSL filters actually work. And, if they can be used for our phones even if we don't have DSL anymore.

Thanks in advance.

  1. DSL filters block out the frequencies that the DSL modem uses.  Not regular static.  You have some sort of psychical problem on the line (phone or other equipment plugged into line/line cord/wiring/outside).  Take a plain old  wired telephone out to the Network Interface Device and plug it into the test jack.  If there is still static on it, the problem is outside and is the telephone companies problem.  If the line is clear, you have a problem inside.  Good Luck!

  2. sure the work but I did not think you needed them with cable modems??

    Hope this helps

  3. Yes, they work if you have a DSL line, which would cause interference on your phone line.  Otherwise, probably not.

  4. The job that DSL filters do is to separate the upper frequencies of the telephone line where DSL (digital subscriber line) does it's magic, with the lower frequencies used for voice communication using your phone.  What your DSL filters won't do is filter a line "fault", which in your case sounds like a "short" which causes static.  Static is a sign there is a "short" on line which needs to be diagnosed and located, and then repaired. If you want to use the DSL filters, they will not affect performance of your voice communications, but they will not clear up any static.
