Question:

DSL in multiple rooms? Help?

I used to live in a 4 bedroom apartment with 3 other roommates. We had a DSL connection setup that I want to recreate. One of my roommates had the DSL modem in her room. The other 3 roommates had some kind of adapter that plugged into the phone outlet, and then we could plug our ethernet cable directly into that adapter to get internet. We didn't have to have wires running along the floor or install bizarre wiring; we just used the adapters. I'm asking AT&T if they offer those anymore, and they don't know what I'm talking about.

Does anyone know what I'm talking about? I just want to have my DSL modem downstairs, and I want to have a non-wireless computer upstairs. I can't make it wireless because it is a work computer, and they will not let me b/c of security.

  1. See link below..

This is called powerline networks.. where a LAN can be established using your wired electrical outlets... not the greatest solution, but works.

I also attached a link with some forum information on these networks,,, pros and cons and experiences people had with them...

I placed the link below, but there are others just google it.

    Good Luck!!

  2. What you are more than likely talking about is a switch that will connect mulitple computers via ethernet (cat 5). Unfortunately, AT&T will not offer that product due to the Linksys home setup that is very easy to setup once purchased at Best Buy... it is called a linksys wireless router and this will make everything wireless. That will be your only option to make your roommates and you very happy.

  3. I think you need to take a trip to Best Buy or CircuitCity. I do believe they have what you need

  4. AT@T does not offer that set up anymore.  It is a shame because it worked just fine.  here is a link to a device that is simular just works over the power lines instead of the phone line.
