I have had SO many contrasting opinions about cheaper DSLR's, I really don't know which to get.

I've had my eyes set on the NIkon D40, Sony A200, and Olympus E-410. Out of THESE THREE, which is best?

  1. Go to your local camera shop try Nikon D40 and Sony A200 for under £250 body only they are the only 2 to recommend, under £500, Nikon D60 Sony A300 and Canon EOS 450, all great value for money cameras, the 3 manufacturers all have masses of experiance in manufacturing SLR's, Sony have only been marketing for a couple of years but they did buy Minolta who were the major innovative company right through untill the end of 1990's.Choose what fits your budget and what feels good to handle, once you've got the body, buy a wide to mid telephoto zoom say 18 to 70 probably a good independant manufacturer like Sigma will be around 25% cheaper than Original Equipment Manufacturers lenses, at 10mp images you are not going to tell the differance unless you enlarge to A3+ Have a good time talking to and supporting your local dealer, most of the good ones will price match, or get very close internet sites.

  2. get the one best for u

  3. Nikon D40  is the best in almost every way, however the sony is better value for money. The olympus is not as good as either of them. I would still suggest the Nikon as it has built up a steady reputation amongst it's steady performance. However, if you are pressed for cash i would say get the sony.

  4. Read the magazine test for an unbiased opinion. people tend to recommend what THEY own!!!

  5. Get The Sony a200

it has much more megapixels than the nikon d40 camera, which only has six by the way. Another key aspect is the LCD screen, on the a200 you have a 2.7" inch screen, whereby on the nikon d40 and e-410, you only have a 2.5 inch screen. However, the nikon d40 and the a200 don't have ' live view', but the olympus does.

So if live view is important to you, you should get the E-410, but sacrifice the larger form-factor, and larger screen.

However, if you want a camera with more of a grip, and better reviews, you should get the a200, you'll get a larger screen, and more things. So i think you should get  the a200, or the e-410, primarily you SHOULD get the a200, but if you can't miss live view, get the E-410. Avoid the d40 all together.

  6. Get the Nikon! Why? Because Nikon has been making cameras and lens for years while Sony was making walkmans! The Olympus E-410? Go to dpreview.com and read the test review. You can also read the test reviews on the D 40 and A200 then you can come to a conclusion.

  7. In my opinion, go with the Nikon.

I went with the D60 and could not be happier. Nikon is a really good brand that never makes crappy stuff! Also the body of the D40 fits the hand SO nicely. It is truly a great camera but you may want to get it with VR (Vibration Reduction) lens so that you do not get blurry pictures from camera shake.

Then again, I have heard the opposite, my friend has a D40 and feels limited and sometimes feels bored with it :/

SO I guess the point is just go into a camera store... Talk to the peeps... and mess around with the cameras.

You really can't go wrong with any of these so good luck and I hope that you are happy with the choice that you make!

  9. Of those 3 I'd go for the Nikon, it offers the widest array of available lenes and accessories, and more of an ability to upgrade, when ready.  (Consider the Canon XTi or XSi as well )

Check them all out at http://dpreview.com , read the reviews, then go to a real camera store, and handle the different cameras, try them with different lenses, get a feel for the camera.  Then choose the one which fits you best.
