DT Ryan McBean signs with Baltimore Ravens, will serve 6-game NFL ban before joining-NFL News
Former Denver Broncos’ defensive tackle, Ryan McBean, has been landed a deal from the Baltimore Ravens but the player might miss most of the first half of the 2012 National Football League (NFL) season because of his suspension over violation of the league’s
anti-doping rules.
McBean, who has been suspended for six games by the league office, has disputed findings of the regulators and might get a chance for rehearing of his case.
The NFL found the player in abuse of performance enhancing drugs and penalised him for the action.
Ravens’ general manager, Ozzie Newsome, confirmed the signing of the deal and informed that the management reached the decision after thoroughly investigating the matter.
He said:
"We are giving Ryan the opportunity to compete and make our 53-player roster. We've done our research and consulted with the league office about Ryan and then signed him."
Broncos had placed their franchise tag on McBean last month. The value of the tender was $1.3 million.
With signing of another player, Broncos then rescinded the tender, and eventually he ended up arriving in Baltimore.
His signing by Ravens has come as part of the team’s efforts to fill in holes at the defensive positions, which have been left quite wide open following the departure of a couple of players, who deserted the team during the free agency market.
The Ravens are traditionally very strong on the defence. They have relied on the department extensively in their wins, most of the seasons.
However, the team has now shifted its focus on the offence. Ravens have hired a fulltime quarterbacks’ coach and added a couple of new receivers to the line-up.
Interestingly, Ravens have qualified for the playoffs for last four consecutive years. Yet they could not get a shot at the Super Bowl title.
The owner and managers of the team are now hopeful of breaking out of the impasse this year.
They said to have looked at their needs at almost all positions in the squad thoroughly and hired new players where they were needed the most.
