Question:

DTV switchover - can you still tape other channels?

My mom loves to tape one TV channel while watching another. I've been told that with the DTV switchover coming next year, she will only be able to tape the channel that the TV is 'watching'. Is this true? What are our options? Currently, she plans on getting the box, but would be open to a new TV if that would help. She lives out in the country - cable isn't an option, but she could do satalite if neccessary. I don't know anything about this stuff. Please help!

  1. First, I am assuming you are getting your TV from an antenna, not cable or satellite.  She would need to get a second converter box.  The converter boxes basically become the tuner for the TV or VCR.  Install the converter box between the antenna and the VCR and tune the channels with the box.

The government is giving away coupons for $40 toward the purchase of a converter box.  They allow two coupons per household.  You can apply for one at http://www.dtv2009.gov.

If you have cable or satellite, you will not need a converter.

I hope this helps.  Please return and select a Best Answer from all of those submitted.
