DUI arrest: WR Justin Blackmon says lesson learnt, Jacksonville Jaguars back him -NFL News
Three key members of Jacksonville Jaguars were in front of mediamen on Wednesday, June 06, and all of them defending one man – rookie wide receiver, Justin Blackmon, over his driving under influence (DUI) charge that had landed him in
jail before being released on $1000 bond on Sunday, June 03.
It was the first appearance of the player before journalists and he while seating himself between general manager, Gene Smith and head coach, Mike Mularkey, looked to be a child avoiding facing his elders over some wrongdoing.
Not only that, Blackmon became open about his “poor judgement” while commenting that his future actions will show him a different man altogether.
He was not finished then and there, and went on to swear off drinking.
Blackmon said:
"People are going to think what they are going to think. Words are words. It's my actions that are going to have to show."
He added:
“I just want to apologize and let people know that it's not who I am, that's not who I'm going to be."
Smith on the occasion defended selection of Blackmon out of the 2012 draft, saying at the time of his recruitment the player’s profile was clean and transparent of any problem.
Further, Smith backed the player for the planned change and improvement in his conduct and actions, pointing out at the necessity of believing a man for his words.
Smith said:
"At the time that we made the selection, we felt very good about the selection. And I still do because I feel like I've got to take a man for his word. We have a chance to get him right. He's a young player and he's got to do his part."
So all seems to have gone right as far as the player’s relationship with his new employers and managers is concerned.
At the media talk the player was seen looking at the ground most of the time, trying to avoid journalists and other participants.
Blackmon is currently free on the $1000 bond but faces a trial after entering into a not guilty plea.
