DVD Backup to avi format?

Question

I want to convert my dvds to avi format (about 700mb in size) so that I can store them on my harddrive as they are getting scratched. What is a program that would be good for this. Please note that some of my dvds are write protected and I would be very grateful if someone could tell me how to get around this.

You may take a look at this guide, it will teach you how to rip copyright protected DVD to AVi video for backup, it works pretty well for me

"magic dvd ripper" is a good piece of software for this. Its not free though.

If you want free, use dvdfab http://www.dvdfab.com/free.htm and autogk (more difficult to use)

also, re-encoding is a very slow process unless you have a reasonably fast computer.
