DVD Cleaners?

As one of the "old brigade" I am unsure whether to buy a cleaner that cleans the disk or one that cleans the laser reader (please don't say both!) and would appreciate advice.

  1. I would just clean the disks with a soft cloth and water. Always use a single stroke motion from the center of the disk to the outer edge just like if you were wiping a spoke on a wheel. The lense cleaners... I don't buy the idea so i don't buy the product. They are a scam.

If you suspect your laser is dirty. open up the case and carefully spray the laser with canned air. You can also wipe the laser carefully with a Qtip and then use the canned air again to remove any lint which may get deposited on the laser. Make sure you UNPLUG the player first.

However, the laser is in an enclosed cabinet. it is not going to get so dirty it does not work unless you leave the drawer open all the time.

  2. I'm no expert, but from my reading which to try (or neither) all depends on the symptoms.

Skips and freezes are probably associated with disk scratches or "goop" ... and the disk may need "cleaning" or treating

Playing CDs but not DVDs probably means a laser alignment or weakening issue (CDs are less picky than DVDs).

Failure to recognize the disk could be a mechanical or lens "dirt" issue.

I have included some links to various FAQs, reviews or DIY repairs. I make no claims about any of this material ... it is offered for your consideration.
