DVD Decoder for Realplayer or Media Player?

Question

Well I just got a used computer and I was told you could watch videos on it but media player said that there wasn't a dvd decoder for it so it couldn't play it. all the dvd decoders i found online for media player cost money that i don't have so i downloaded realplayer. Is there any other dvd player that i can download or a dvd decoder that's free and actually works?

Guh please help me.
