DVD Duplicator?

How do stand-alone DVD duplicators work? Do they override the factory protection? Can you burn a dual layer disc to a regular 4.7 disk? Any other information would be appreciated.

  1. A stand alone DVD duplicator is usually used for non-protected DVD-R production on a small scale. There are programs on PCs that do unprotecting and size reductions in various ways, but this is not the usual job of a dedicated unit... at least not those I'm familiar with.

This is basically just a small computer and one or more DVD-R drives. They usually have a servo-mounted robot arm or some other means for moving out the burned disc and in a blank.. this is one reason such machines are pricey.

You cannot directly duplicate a commercial, protected DVD using standard DVD-Rs just by "cloning" it. The CSS protection keys are in an area of the DVD-R that can't be written using normal DVD burners or DVD-R/RW blanks. These are known as "general" format discs. There's a format called "authoring" that can reproduce the protection keys, but the burners and blanks are prohibitively expensive.

If I'm publishing a DVD for a small market (which I do), I have three choices. I can burn and label these myself... pretty cheap today, but no copy protection possible. This is fine for very small quantities, but it's a lot of work. I can order a glass mastered DVD, which is fine if I'm making a few thousand or more.. this is the same thing you buy in the DVD store from Sony or Disney or whomever, and it can carry protection. But say I need 100 discs.. I might order these from a duplication service... I send them one disc (email, send a tape, whatever), and they burn me 100 DVD-Rs, using dedicated DVD duplicators. Also no copy proctection here.

  2. cause most DVD movie are encrypted( CSS Copy right protected), you will need to have a 3rd party DVD copy software to help you, take a look at http://www.dvd-to-ipod-converter.com/dvd... this unbiased and detailed comparison chart of top 5 DVD copy softwares, 1 Click DVD copy is the best and works great for me.
