DVD Player to Receiver question?

Question

I'm planning to get a New component DVD player. Which, i assume has R,G,B, Color plugs and 2, Red and white plugs for audio?

I have a very nice Surround sound system, but it never stated it was a HD compatible. But it does have slots for the Red white audio input.

Is that all i really need for the receiver for my Surround sound?

RGB are meant for component signals.( For good HD quality HDMI or DVI connection is required.) Red and White plugs are for analog stereo sound (right and left channels).

For a good surround sound experience, few things have to be kept in mind. You have to have a DVD player that supports DTS and Dolby Digital (two of the most common standards). This sound has to be transferred to the receiver digitally. It means that there should be some kind of digital connection on your DVD player and receiver (Optical or Coaxial). It's a single connection which carried signal for all the audio unlike left and right analog channels for stereo.

Then this signal has to be decoded by your receiver and then amplified for the speakers. This is in short how to get surround sound if you have a receiver.

Just an input from red and white plugs may not give you DTS or Dolby Digital. Look for the digital audio connections.

You have to use a digital output from most DVD players to get 5.1.

Check your "Surround Sound" system. It should have a spare optical input (little square jack) or a spare Coaxial Digital jack (an RCA female jack).

Then make sure you buy a DVD player that has that matching output. Some players have both outputs, but my newer players only seem to offer optical output.

Does your DVD player and receiver have those optical connectors at the back?

You can use the optical output of the DVD player connected to your AV receiver's optical input using an optical cable.
