  1. a good rule is the more things it can do the better try http://www.which.co.uk/?CMP=KNC-GOOGLE&H...

they give you a better idea

  2. it is code for " we are stupid designers and we cant do anything simple".

  3. it means it plays all these cd/dvd formats in this case  all dvd and cd formats very good player

  4. Those are all the different disk types that will play in the DVD player. Dvds are being phased out so you probably want to find an inexpensive (but name brand) player for now. You'll be switching to blu-ray before you know it.

If you want to know more about each type:

  5. DVD recorders and players work using DVD+, DVD-, or both, the R means that you can record on it once and keep it, RW means that you can record and then erase and re record, this applies to DVD or CD, JPEG means that photographs on CDs can be played, if you buy a DVD recorder, get one that plays both + and -, that way you should be able to use it for most Discs.

  6. Like already said their diferent formats of discs, basically when getting a dvd player you will want and prefer it to include as many of these formats, because then almost anything u put into it in terms of music and video it can play it.

things like "dvd+r, cd+rw" etc basically refer to non official cd media, such as when you buy a "cd+r" disc, copy your mp3 music onto it in the corect way, you then can chuck it into a dvd player which suports "cd+r" type discs and play your mp3 music.

dvd formats hold more data then the cd format discs also. which is why official movie discs, will be on dvd discs, they require more room then music does, hence why music is normally on standard cd formats.

regards to blue-ray c**p, that looks like were the industry is going, but its heading there mainly because of the data which can be held on the discs and sony's influence as as a competitor in the market. Blueray wont be a normal standard like dvd players for a fair few years to come..simply because its a rip of and doesnt warrant its price tag...but thats how Sony does business.

Ods are another player will be introduced within the decade in direct competition to blue-ray with even better capacity, if blue-ray hasnt become cheap as chips like a dvdplayer now, then it will get replaced...but in all reality it doesnt benefit us to much as a consumer.

Simply put investing into blu-ray...is a waist of money, hence why the industry isnt imbracing it, but being forced to acept it for the coming future.

  7. Most are disc standards, except for one that is a photo format

DVD-Reads professionally stamped DVD media (purchased DVDs), DVDs hold 4.7GBs of data

DVD-R-Reads blank DVD media that was burned in DVD-R/RW drives, you can only write to DVD-R media once

DVD-RW-Reads blank DVD media that was burned in DVD-RW drives, you can erase and re-write to this media

DVD+R-Reads blank DVD media that was burned in DVD+R/RW drives, you can only write to DVD+R media once, the only standard compatible with Dual Layer burning

DVD+RW-Reads blank DVD media that was burned in DVD+RW drives, you can erase and re-write to this media, the only standard compatible with Dual Layer burning

CD-Reads professionally stamped CD media (purchased CDs), holds 700MBs of data

CD-R-Reads blank CD media that was burned in CD-R/RW drives, you can only write to CD-R media once

CD-RW-Reads blank CD media that was burned in CD-RW drives, you can erase and re-write to this media

JPEG playback-Plays JPEG files burned to a CD or DVD, a standard video format
