DVD Players with USB and external harddrives- can these 2 function together to play movies off of harddrives?

I bought my DVD player, a pretty decent up-convert to 1080p. One thing I saw is that it had a USB port. Now, I backup all of my movies onto my computer using DVD Decrypter or DVD Shrink, and with a few DVD playing programs, I can watch the movies directly off of my computer. Is there a way that I could upload the movie files to an external hard-drive, connect it to my DVD player, and then simply watch all of my movies off of my hard-drive? If I can get this to work properly, I could realistically fit 400+ movies onto my 2TB hard-drive and just have all of my movies, ready for action all in one little box.

I'm beginning to think that this is the way of the future. :)

No, that USB port is for updatting the firmware on the DVD player
