DVD burner not playing or burning cds or cd-r?

Recently my dvd drive is not recognizing my cds or cd-r. I have a NEC 3540 optical drive. It can play DVDs though.

Your lence may be dirty or a component may have gave up the ghost. i had one that the motor that turned the cd gave out and i had to buy a new one.

I had the same problem. Most of the times it is a hardware failure.I went to NEC service centre and unfortunately they don't have a replacement. I recommend to buy a new drive pal! (as you said you don't like cleaning the lens)

Try running a CD lens cleaner on it. Your player must have dirt on it causing your player to not function well. Or maybe, replacing it will solve the problem.
