DVD camcorder records over itself?

I'm not technical at all I have a DVD camcorder and when I record several bits it sort of records over itself... its difficult to describe!

Here's an example:

I record a two minute piece, then a ten minute piece. If I play the video from start to end, the video will only be two minutes long, but if I start it from say 1 minute in, then the video will start from the start of the ten minute piece... this doesn't make much sense to me and probably doesn't to you either!

Er, any idea where I'm going wrong? (it happened with my last one aswell so definetly my fault, not the camcorders)

You are using a rewritable DVD.
