I am looking to complement my Onkyo HT-SR800 with a DVD player that has built-in decoding for the Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, and DTS-HD as well as 5.1 or 7.1 analog outputs. What can you recommend as solid player good price?

  1. You don't need a player with a built-in decoder. You would only need that for a receiver that ONLY had 5.1 or 7.1 analog inputs and no digital audio inputs / decoder of it's own.  Your receiver is capable of decoding all DVD surround formats.  A player with a coaxial or optical digital output for audio and a coaxial or optical toslink cable is all you will need (your receiver has inputs for either). Your receiver will decode the digital surround signal. No DVD player will have a built-in decoder for HD formats because DVD is not a HD format and doesn't use these audio formats.

So... just about any player will work for you. I wouldn't spend too much because we'll all be buying Blu-Ray players when the price comes down. You might want to purchase a player with upconverting if you have a HDTV... or a player that can play DivX files if you ever download DivX movies from the web. Then, you could just burn the files to a simple data disc without converting anything and watch them on your DVD player.

You also have to remember this is an international forum. Hard to recommend a specific player or a deal if we don't know what country you're in...
