DVD player will only play copies and not legit discs now?

Question

I don't understand why it will play any copies, but genuine rentals it just says "no disc". It started gradually and now it won't play anything legit. Any ideas? (I watch series in big chunks as I have no t.v reception)

Broken is broken, but this is just plain stupid. Thanks.

If it is a cheap player get a new one because the prices have gone down so much compared to the new HD-DVD and Blue Ray-DVD prices.

Likely either the rented discs are dirty or scratched or your player is out of alignment and the home made discs do not fill the disc so do not have a problem.  Or the home made discs are not dual layer and you are having problems with dual layer DVD titles rented.
