DVD player wont read burnt dvds?

Question

My dvd player wont read the dvds I have burnt. I use standard dvdr 4.7 gb disks. The strange thing is, it will play after I clean the laser lens, with the laser cleaning cd. This is the only way to get them to work, run the cleaning cd first, then put the dvd in. Whats wrong with my dvd player?? (Apex rm-1010w)

It might be a +/- compatability issue.
