DVD players: do they need a tuner? I am seeing that the cheaper ones don't have a tuner, is it important?

I want to buy a new DVD player and I see that the cheaper ones say no tuner, but I am not sure what that means. I know for the TVs it does not matter if it has a digital tuner if you have cable. Is it the same thing? Because then, I don't care if it has one or not and I can save some money!

  1. The ones with tuners are usually the DVD recorder/players. If you are a big fan of recording TV shows then get the DVD recorder with tuner.

  2. A DVD player doesn't need a tuner.

If it has a tuner, it's a DVD recorder.  This is essentially like a VCR that uses a burnable DVD instead of a video cassette for recording.  DVD recorders can also play standard DVDs as well.

If you want to record shows off TV on a DVD, then you'll want to get a DVD Recorder.  Otherwise, if you're just going to watch DVDs, just get a DVD player.
