  1. blu ray is better but upscaling a dvd is a little noticeable but not a grand thing  but not near blu ray or hd-dvd

  2. In terms of picture quality? Upscalling a dvd to 1080p will look slightly better than if it was just played in 480p but it still won't hold a candle to Blu-Ray since there the image is not upscaled it is encoded on the disc at 1080p.

  3. You might see an increase in resolution but you are also increase the risk of artifacts in the image, as you are adding information to a picture where there was none before. I would go Blu-ray. And dont buy HD-DVD, it is not capable of 1080p, only 1080i, and cannot hold as much information as Blu-ray can. An inferior technology, dont know how it has lasted this long.

  4. I'd say a normal Hi-Def DVD player. But if you want a Blue-Ray reader buy a PS3 becasue it's cheaper and it still can play games and watch Blue-Ray disks.

  5. Good question.  Blue ray has nothing to do with resolution.  Blue ray is just a type of disk that happens to hold more data on it than any other type of disk.  Yes, blue ray disks are often, if not exclusively, HD movies.  But HD-DVD disks and blue ray disks have exactly the same resolution movies on them.  Furthermore, if you don't have an HDTV it doesn't matter.  So, if you have an HD-DVD player or a Blue Ray player with an HDTV you won't see any difference.  If you are asking specifically about upscaling... then I think you need to be more specific in your question.  How do you mean upscaling?

  6. Upscaling is not as good as blu-ray.  But, it sure looks better than standard DVD.

I got a Sony Bravia 1080p TV and it upscales.  I am impressed with how well it does, yet there are some areas of the picture, or some shots, that show odd artifacts as a result.  A true blu-ray disk won't have those artifacts.

My first blu-ray disk will be... "Baraka" if it comes out on blu-ray.  Amazing movie!
