Question:

DVI-I to HDMI?

I've heard some stipulation over the switch from DVI-I to HDMI cords. I'm currently looking for such a cord, but I've heard some say that the the added DVI-I pins aren't used on HDMI. I find this hard to believe as HDMI has a faster transfer rate than that of DVI, although HDMI transfer rate is both Audio and Video. Any answers?

  1. There are two basic kinds of DVI-DVIA and DVID. DVIA is analog. DVID is digital. DVII carries both-so it has "extra" pins.

DVID and HDMI are identical, except for the carrying of digital audio by HDMI.

What people may be referring to, regarding rates, is that the latest HDMI signals require a larger bandwidth to handle "deep color".

But it's not likely that anybody is building hardware capable of generating or accepting that signal using a DVI connector.

So, whatever you're connecting to that has a DVI connector can't use the signal anyway-so you don't need to be concerned about a bandwidth issue.

However, there is no reason that a cable built for DVI could not carry the latest HDMI signal, if it were designed for the required bandwidth.

Bottom line, buy an HDMI ti DVI cable, or add a HDMI to DVI adapter to an HDMI cable, and you'll be fine.

  2. You can find such a cord in Music direct.

  3. There is an adapter that is from HDMI - DVI. And you just use the HDMI as the cable
