Question:

DVI to HDMI cable confusion?

Hi, I'm confused about getting a DVI to HDMI cable to use my spare computer on my HDTV with only HDMI inputs. I see that there are cables that have a DVI output and turn it into a HDMI input.

The question is, there are 5 kinds of PCI cables! (See here all the way down)---> http://www.datapro.net/techinfo/dvi_info.html

The PC had a DVI port with all the pins, does the number of pins matter on the DVI side? could you advise me what flavor of DVI cable I would need to do this by looking at the website mentioned above?

BTW, the video card is a ATI 9200 (DVI output) and the TV is a Mitsubishi DLP with (HDMI input)

Thanks

  1. It's a DVI-D cable. I suggest you get the DVI-D cable as opposed to the DVI/HDMI adapter. They are fionicky. I tried using one and it didn't work properly. Also make sure the ATI card drivers are up to date. ATI cards aren't very good. I know from experience. And like the previous poster said. Get cables on ebay, they have good ones at great prices.

  2. You'll have to look at the video card to make sure but it's more than likely a DVI-D output. The simplest way to do what you want is get the DVI cable and get a DVI to HDMI adapter,I just got one off ebay for $3.You need a DVI-D female to HDMI male adapter. If you don't use ebay, just type dvi-d female to hdmi male adapter into google.

  3. If your computer is very close to your TV (less than 12 feet away), you'll be fine with a cable that has two DVI-D ends, combined with an adapter to hook the cable to the TV.  If you decide to get this cable, get a single-link cable because the HDMI on your TV won't use the dual-link functionality of the DVI.

If your computer is more than 12 feet from your TV (as in, if you need more than 12 feet of cable to connect the two) get a longer cable that has a DVI connector on 1 end and a HDMI connector on the other.  HDMI is designed to work well over long distances, so the signal will carry to the TV.  If your TV is more than 50 feet from your computer, you could see some degradation in the signal quality but with a cable of reasonable quality it will still work.

In my opinion, regardless of how far the TV is from the computer, I would recommend getting the DVI to HDMI cable.  This avoids the unnecessary hassle, cost, and potential failure of an additional connector.  If you buy the cable at a good internet retailer, the cable should be pretty cheap (the same as, or not much more than a DVI to DVI cable).
