I have a television show saved onto DVR. I would like to put it onto a dvd or into my computer or onto some type of tape to have a more permanent recording. What do I need to accomplish this and what do you suggest I put the television show on?

  1. Get a stand alone DVD recorder at any store which sells such electronic items.  Get a Sony, Panasonic, or LG model and avoid those ILO, Memorex, and other off brands.

Buy one that is compatible with DVR-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW and DVD+RW for recording to be able to use all popular discs with it.

    1. Connect the DVD Recorder's Video and Audio Inputs to the matching outputs on the DVR.  Connect the DVD recorder's Video and Audio Outputs to matching inputs on the TV.

    2. Turn on the DVR, the DVD recorder and the TV.

    3. Select the video input on the DVD recorder.

Select or tune the Video and Audio input on the TV.

    4. Put the right kind of blank media into the DVD recorder which is one of the following: DVD-R,  DVD-RW, DVR+R or DVD+RW.  You need to check the DVD recorder manual for this or you need to make sure to BUY a DVD recorder that is compatible with + and - formats for recording (not just for playback).

    5. If DVD-R or DVD+R you must format the media if your recorder's manual says to do that. This process may be manual or automatic depending on your recorder. You need to read the owners manual to know for sure unless the disc automatically formats when you close the door on the player.

    6. If DVD-RW or DVD+RW no format is needed.

    7. Prepare the program you want to copy by starting it from the beginning and pausing it.

    8.  Make sure the setup shows the picture and sound form the DVR going through the DVD recorder (if display is on in DVD recorder this confirms this and note that the display does not get recorded unless it is the one coming from the DVR).

    9. When ready press the record button and begin the recording for the amount of time that you have set in the speed selection: XP - 1hours (highest quality), SP - 2 hours (best compatibility with all players), other speeds more time (less compatibility with players).  START PLAYING the DVR program at the same time.

    10.  Play the entire program and record it.  Try not to make such recordings when the DVR might need to record a new program.  Some DVRs display RECORDING and a info bar when the new recording starts and this will end up on the DVD.

    11. When the disc is full or when you are finished with it you must FINALIZE the disc if it is DVD-R or DVD+R.

Then you cannot write more to it but it will play in all compatible players.

If it is DVD-RW or DVD+RW you need not finalize it -- that process does not apply -- and you can rewrite it by deleting the whole disc and reuse it up to 100 times if not scratched.

To connect a TV which has no Video and Audio inputs to a DVD recorder use an RF modulator or use a old VCR with Video and Audio inputs and select those inputs and turn on the VCR mode (if necessary).

  2. You can not get this off of your DVR. It is not possible as the boxes are restricted and most of the ports in the back are not active, they are dummy ports. This is to make sure that you are not participating in any sort of Copywrite infringement.
