DVR without subscribing to a service like TiVo?

Is there a DVR you can buy to record television without subscribing to TiVo or Direct TV? I have been to Best Buy and Circuit City and they don't have anything. Thanks.

No. In order for you to be able to record you need the service from a provider cause this companies own the rights to do so. before Ultimate TV used to do that but they don't come anymore... and nobody service them.

i dont know where you live but we have Insight Communcation and have them for our cable service..

we have digital cable (Cheaper than tivo) and we have a DVR

some other cable companies offer this.
