why would it be important to see the mother dog interacting with the pup, what can you tell from this interaction ? can a poor diet produce this white dandruff kind of stuff in the coat ? what should you look for when inspecting the teeth ?

  1. The other posters have pretty well covered why you want to see mom. There's just one more reason I can think of.

Temperament. If the parents are snippy, there's a good chance the pup will grow up to be as well as temperament is hereditary.

Once upon a time, I was so "puppy desperate" I skipped this step, as the byb I was buying from wouldn't show me the parents. I bought the pup anyways, even though I knew that was a red flag. Not a year later, that pup turned, it was growling at my live-in boyfriend's son, and actually tried to bite my boyfriend, as well as company. That dog was unsound. I called the breeder, and she confessed that the mom was snippy. Had I not been so "puppy desperate" I'd have insisted on meeting the parents, and left the puppy there. Saved my money for a dog I could keep. Also, that pup was supposed to be a Maltese. It grew up to resemble a poorly bred poodle. Yet another hereditary problem I could have avoided had I bothered to see both the parents.

I've never made that mistake again. It was a costly mistake, and hurt deeply, as I couldn't keep that pup once it grew up and turned on my family. It simply wasn't safe.

  2. It's important to see the mother to make sure she is the mother, and that she is healthy to, cos if she is healthy the more chance that the pup will be in good shape.

Poor diet could be the cause, also:

    1. Lack of oils in the food - this helps with clean shiny fur.

    2. Is it high in protein & nutrition?

    3. Is it cheap? - Often the expensive food option is the best.

    4. She/he could have had an allergic reaction to flea treatments, shampoo or anything else you may have put on her.

    5. Skin infections/diseases are quite common in pups, make sure she/he hasn't or dosen't go out side until she's/he's had all of her/his jabs and the vet say's its safe to do so.

When checking the teeth make sure there is no tar tar on them, it's a kind of yellow/brown substance that sticks to the teeth, and makes the dog's breath reek. This can cause probs in young life and serious probs in adulthood resulting in vet bills.

The gums should be a pink/red colour (this means there is good blood circulation) the teeth should all be there with no giant gaps where any have fallen out. If this happenes gum diesease could be occuring.

Hope this helps and good luck.

  3. Basically, so you know that the person selling the pup is actually the breeder and hsn't bought the pup in to sell on! Many purchasers have been conned into thinking they were buying from a breeder either by not seeing the dam of the pups or the seller vaguely waving a hand at a dog and saying " Yeah, there's the Mum" !

Many pups suffer from dry skin, particularly when they are changing coats. - it's impossible to tell what causes it without seeing it. My GSD  pup had it and so do pups I've bred, but it's not so noticeable on them because they are a grey/golden colour when young. Ask what the breeder is feeding them on.

Teeth should be white sparkling and sharp - more important is the bite which should be a scissor bite - ie the top teeth fit snugly over the bottom teeth:
