Question:

Dad's cat pee paranoia?

We recently got 2 kittens (they are almost 6 months now) and they are litter-box trained. We clean it regularly, so they have no reason to pee outside of it. The cats are indoor for now, until they get old enough to go outside on their own. Though, my dad seems to have this constant suspicion that the kittens are going to pee/p**p all over the house. He makes them stay in the computer room most of the time, where their litter box is. They aren't allowed in the living room, because they supposedly peed in there, maybe once. (For the record, it didn't smell like pee to me). They aren't even allowed on the front porch, where there is a crappy carpet, because they supposedly dig and pee in the plant dirt. Anyway, my dad is really strict about the cats, and everyone hates it.

Does anyone have advice on what I could do to help them? They are happy cats, but I would just like them to have more freedom around the house. I don't know why the kittens would pee anywhere else, they always have access to their box.

Thank you!

  1. maybe cats are not your dad's favorite.. some people have a stronger sense of smell when it comes 2 odor's.. my sister can smell cat pooh, bird pooh and certain people, but she can't smell herself nor her room.. ewww... and male cats are knowen 2 pee on everything as they mature.. i think your cats are old enough 2 go outside.. give dad a break and make everyone happy  : )

  2. lol! that title is so funny.

  3. If they know what the litter box is for and they use it, then why not put another litter box in another part of the house?  Even if you don't, they should return to the one you do have.  They aren't stupid, and once they know where it is, they should be all set.

When I've moved or gone on vacation in the past, I usually set the box up, show the cats where it is, and then they go on their merry ways, always to return the box when in need.

  4. Tell your dad that nothing will happen

If he is soo concerned, then tell him to put orange peels where he doesnt want the cats to pee.

  5. Is ok  if they pee and p**p on the plants it works as a fertilizer. you can try and disguise the kittens with outfits that match the carpet or color of tile. Your Dad will never notice them.

  6. I don't think you're dad is being unreasonable at all.  If the carpet gets peed on just one time it will stink FOREVER!!!  It's basically ruined and the only way to get rid of the smell is to replace it.  They're cats for cryin out loud.  They only want to eat and sleep anyway.  It sounds like your dad loves you a lot to give them they're very own room.

  7. In Dads defense........was he consulted before you acquired these little babies?  If not he should have been. All of the people in a house need to agree before an animal is brought into the mix.  The animal is the one who will suffer in the end.

Also remember that Dad has to pay for any damages that the babies do to things.

Cat f***s and urine are not fertilizer. It is way to acidic so don't tell him that when they go in the plants that perhaps he has cultivated and are like his babies.

Keep good thoughts on dear old Dad and make sure he agrees to getting the next animal you want.

  8. I've had many cats, and had problems with only one, who liked to pee in the houseplants.

As long as the litter box is clean, your cats will use it.  As animals go, they're pretty fastidious about their waste.

You do want to make sure they're spayed/neutered.  If not, they're much more likely to spray around the house.

  9. your dad sounds like a bit of an uptight guy who shouldnt have cats, he sounds like he doesnt even like them!!

  10. aww that's a hard one. Some people are just like that when it comes to animals. I don't know if there's much to do about it if it's your dad's house besides trying to talk with him about it logically. But if he won't listen you can't really make him accept it if it's his place :(
