  1. Step uncle.  A half-uncle would have to be a half brother to the dad's dad, which he is not, he is the step brother.

  2. If the child was born to grandpa and stepmom, then it's your dad's uncle. There is no such thing as a "half uncle." It's just uncle.

If the son was born to your dad's stepmom before she married your grandpa, then it's up to your dad if he chooses to consider the son as his uncle. There's nothing mandating it and it is allowed. But in the end, it's not a blood relationship, just an emotional one. Those are just as important.

And while I wholly respect Ted's prowess, I would remind him that one need not have any blood relationship to be an uncle. If your parent has a sister and the sister gets married, her husband is automatically your uncle. Genealogy doesn't recognize any relationship of "half-uncle" because it doesn't require a full blood relationship to be called an uncle.

  3. our grandfathers second wife has a son by another man so he is  your grandfathers step son  which would mean he is not related at all to your father

  4. Step-uncle if by "has" you mean already has, by a previous marriage (or fling) when Grandfather marries her.

Half-uncle if by "has" you means gives birth to after grandfather marries her, and he is grandfather's son.

You got different answers because people assumed one or the other meanings.

The son is half-brother or step-brother to all of your dad's aunts and uncles on that side, too, if there are any.

A fair number of people have full uncles that are younger than they.

Abigail  has Bruce when she is 16.

Bruce has a son, Charles, when Bruce is 18. Abigail is 34.

Abigail and her husband Adam go on a cruise to celebrate her 40th birthday. The celebration gets intimate, 9 month later along comes Bob.

Bob is Charles' uncle even though he is 6 years younger than Charles.

It was more common before 1920, when women tended to marry when they were 16 - 20 (14 - 18 in West Virginia, where my kin are from) and have children until they were 40 -44 or died.

    ==================

My august colleague below says there is no such thing as a half uncle. I beg to differ. If there is such thing as a half-brother, then there is a half-uncle and half first cousin, although no one but a genealogist showing off would ever use the terms.

Your full uncle has the DNA of your grandmother and grandfather in him. A half uncle has the DNA from just one of your grandparents in him.

25% of your first cousin's DNA comes from each of his grandparents. A full 1C has 50% of his DNA from your grandparents, as do you. A half 1C has just 25%, from one of your grandparents.

  5. The son is grandpa's step son.  He would be a step brother to your dad's father (your grandfather).   He would be a step uncle to your dad.

Age has nothing to do with any of it.

  6. I believe that would make him your father's half-uncle..... which sounds kind of silly, but I think it's right.

  7. It sounds weird but I would guess he would be his half uncle.
