I'm going to college in the fall and need extra spending money. I am looking for a job at a doctors office for the experience and the good office hours. But my dad insists that I don't work during school but If I'm the one going to school and working, isn't it my decision? I worked my senior year of high school and maintained being on honor roll. Ive improved my time management but my dad insists on getting his way! Help!

  1. Sometimes work can really get in the way while your going to school. Ask your dad if hes willing to give you extra money if you don't work. Maybe find a job at the school. GOOD LUCK!!!

  2. If your dad is paying your way, then you should respect his wishes. It's his money on the line if you do poorly academically because you're spending too much time at work rather than studying.

If YOU are paying your way, then go ahead and do what you want.

  3. Is he paying your tuition? See about a work study position and just don't tell dad or pitch it as college related and good work experience.

  4. If you are paying for college and living expenses completely independently, do whatever you want.

If dad's footing the bill, it's on his terms. Of course he wants you to dedicate yourself as much as possible to the studies if he's paying. "Extra spending money" isn't necessary.

If you really want to impress dad, tell him that since you're an adult now, you will no longer require ANY assistance from him. Thank him for the first 18 years and go be an adult.

  5. Well, I would say don't work if you can.  It is great to go to college and not have to work.  You will be doing lots more studying than in H.S.

How about just a 10 to 15 hour job a week?  On campus?  Maybe then he will compromise with you.

  6. it's your choice as it's your life but as it upsets your dad why don't you just not tell him...

  7. It sounds like he wants you to put all your time and effort into learning and studying ,,

    College is harder then College.

I say if you don't NEED the money for yourself ,,

then you should not work your first year and then if you do REALLY well you're first year then try again ,,

or even after your first semester .
