Dad trying to make his Rottweiler like my domestic cat?

We had her for about six years. Shes usually outside all year round except for winter. We just recently got this cat in July. My dad found it and my mom,sis and I had all decided to keep it. Well every time my cat peek outside at the dog. Roxy (the dog) barks and the cat seems petrified and scared. So my dad keeps saying let "Roxy look at the cat, it will help her like the cat and familiarize herself with his smell. " but all it looks like the method is doing is causing Roxy to become jealous and angry. Is there any better way to make them like each other before winter comes or should I just keep them away from each other from each other like we've initially been doing?

  1. its probly not possable sorry

  2. The proper way to introduce any new animal to the current resident pet is to introduce the newcomer to the current. This means holding the dog and presenting it to the cat at the door, not bringing the cat to the dog.

Since this works best when you first bring an animal home it may be way to late as they have established a routine already. If so then just wait, time will heal all the problems for you.

  3. Your dog has to be completely calm when the cat is in it's presents.

Can you put your dog in a cage... with the cat able to roam freely... MAKE SURE THE DOG DOES NOT REACT TO THE CAT...

Others might have better answers ... my Rott was raised with our cat and our cat was Alfa... so it worked ok.

  4. It will never work, if they were not raised together they will never trust each other. It's a large predator small prey issue. I have had Dobermans raised with cats that play together, but when a strange cat jumped the fence they tore it apart, and my present Rott was not raised with cats and sees them as something to chase and kill.

  5. trying to introduce them to be friends will prove to be a challenge but not impossible.  we did it little by little and show roxie even more love than ever

  6. For the first initial meetings hold your dog on a leash and let the cat roam around (you DONT want to try and hold a scared cat). Let your dog sniff the cat and the cat sniff the dog while your dog is on the leash and you can pull him back if she gets mean. Most cats will let dogs know how they feel... cats have a funny way of dominating over dogs even if the dog is large. I have 2 cats and 2 dogs and had the cats first. When the dogs came along the cats pretty much let the dogs know not to mess with them. And now they all get along really well and even sleep and snuggle together. Yours just need time to get used to each other.
