Question:

Dad uses broadband & his laptop has wireless card ... should I get him an antenna for when he goes to Florida?

My dad joined modern society this year & switched from dial-up to broadband. The thing is, he goes to Florida for the winter. His laptop does have a wireless card, but I don't know if that means he'll be all set once he & his laptop get there. I've heard of wireless antennas??? but I don't know what they are really, or even if getting him a wireless antenna will make it more likely he'll be able to just turn his computer on & have internet access when he gets there? Or will he need to get his own broadband service once he gets to Florida? My advice to him so far was just to wait & see when he gets there, if he has internet ... he's not thrilled with the 'wait & see' idea.

I know this is probably a stupid question & for that, I apologize in advance. I really don't know what to tell him, and I need some kind of concrete advice. Thanks.

  1. you should have him contact the place he will be at in FL, to ask if they offer any internet access at all.

if they do, you can ask them what will be required of your father in order to utilize the service.

its likely that they will offer wireless/wifi, but it may not be free.

another alternative, if your father does this sort of travel regularly, is to suggest he get a mobile broadand contract that works where he lives, and where he travels to.

both sprint and verizon offer great EVDO mobile broadband for $60/mo

  2. I've got DSL service in Iowa and couldn't be more pleased. I'm not sure which is better, DSL or cable. I recommend calling a Florida provider to help you. http://www.localbroadbandservice.com/Flo... Call them up and explain to them your questions.

  3. No need to get an antenna, it is built into the wireless card. He will have to find a signal (hotspot) which will let him connect to the internet using the hotspot internet connection. Most coffee places, hotels. etc offer free wireless.
