Daddy Nose Best is the only Preakness candidate Asmussen has
With Hierro and Isn’t He Clever all likewise passed on a trip to Pimlico, Steven Asmussen will still be represented by one of his 3-year-old colts, and he is, Daddy Nose Best, who is exiting a troubled trip at Churchill Downs in the Grade 1 Kentucky Derby where he finished 10th to winner, I’ll Have Another.
Cathy and Bob Zollars' Daddy Nose Best is looking good for the middle jewel of the Triple Crown.
Bred in Kentucky by Patricia Ann Elia Trust, Daddy Nose Best was added to the list of Preakness candidates after the colt work over the Churchill Downs track on 14 May, 2012, which was labelled muddy.
Steven Asmussen had him worked half a mile that Daddy Nose Best comfortably covered in 53 seconds.
"The decision will be made on Tuesday after we see how he comes out of his work," said Zollars by phone from Texas. "He came out of the (Kentucky) Derby fine. We had him all checked over. Steve and I will talk it over on Tuesday."
The 3-year-old Scat Daddy colt, Daddy Nose Best is a well seasoned sophomore, and with 11 starts, he hit the board on numerous occasions as a juvenile, but lacked that killing instinct to convert those placed finishes into victories.
With 8 starts as a juvenile, Daddy Nose Best broke his maiden at fourth asking, and out the previous three attempts he finished as a runner up twice.
No more a maiden, Daddy Nose Best tried his luck in the Grade 3 Summer Stakes last year at a mile, but finished third to winner, Finale.
Back at Churchill Downs after two maiden attempts there earlier, Daddy Nose Best tried in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf at about 1 1/16 miles.
It was still a good finish at sixth last fall, with a though that he will only improve form here on.
In his sophomore season, Daddy Nose Best did improve, posting back to back victories in the El Camino Real Derby at Golden Gate Fields and Grade 3 Sunland Derby at Sunland Park, respectively.
Out of Thunder Gulch mare Follow Your Bliss, Daddy Nose Best could notch this one with the experience he has, but it will be his first time running at the Pimlico, but it evens itself out because many in the Preakness Stakes had never run on the track before.
