why are places such as the strait of gilbraltar, the panama and suez canals, and the strait of hormuz considered strategric areas?

what might be some other ones?

  1. The entire Atlantic and Pacific Oceans were strategic areas during WWll. What makes a "strait" strategic is that its narrowness makes it easier to control because the "enemy" has to pass through a bottleneck and can't take evasive action.


  2. Much of the world's shipping passes through them.  If they were blocked, one nation or another would be at a disadvantage getting supplies in war time.
