  1. im sorry to say most will be slaughtered but some farms will keep on dairy cows to be surrogate mothers for orphaned calfs.

    hope this helps!

  2. ground beef and burgers in the freezer!  Holsteins have a very low fat content and high protein.  Makes for great ground beef.

  3. usually the dairy cows are used for slaughter after they have been used for milk, take jerseys for instance, the breed in general never gets above 1200 pounds when in other breeds that are used for meat production gain weight that goes up to about 3000 or 4000 pounds...dairy cows are generally small and look as though they are anorexic which threw me off the first time i judged them...then i had to do a research project on jerseys for ag class

  4. in one word ''steak''= evil but goodness

  5. Because of fear of mad cow disease, a lot of senior cows are never taken into the meat stream.

In using senior cows, assuming we can avoid the prions from mad cow, we usually see the meat converted into processed meats.

But of course the brain and central nervous system has to be incinerated to avoid passing along any risk of  mad cow disease.

Cows typically have 9 to 12 lactations, so that they will have had that many calves over that many years, There is a dry period of from one to 3 months between lactations.

It is much harder on a cow to extend the lactation by delaying the next calf. But we do not consistently get the cow pregnant right on schedule, so an occasional lactation may go on for even two years.

As cows reach 10 years of age, there is an increased risk of having a cow die of old age. Those often go for pet foods.

Standards for use in the meat stream do not allow cows over 30 months to be used for ground meat... too high a risk of mad cow disease.

The big reason for that standard is that butchers may include the central nervous system in the ground meat. Actual steaks, and other skeletal muscles have not been associated with mad cow disease.

Old dairy cows are really tough steaks, even though very lean, perhaps partly because they are so lean.

But once a cow ceases to be used for dairy purposes, she will not be used for reproduction, for nursing orphan calves. I do not mean the cow will be jettisoned  when her first lactation ends.

End of a lactation is just a short period  (1-3 months) of preparation for the birth of a calf and the start of the next lactation.

  6. THE COWS ARE A SOURCE OF MEAT THEN OR AFTER SOME TIME MAY BE A YEAR IT AGAIN STARTS GIVING MILK

  7. some are slaughtered, if they can't have calves, because they won't lactate if they aren't having calfs.

  8. I totally agree with a couple of other people's answers.

Once a cow has finninshed producing milk, generally farms let the cow go 'dry' for about 3-4 months. during which time the cow will be in her final stages of being 'In Calf' (pregnant) (a cow can become pregnant a month after giving birth & the pregnancy lasts for 9 months). Once the cow has given birth, she will be milked for about 6-7 months, then the farmer let her go dry again.

A cow can produce calfs & milk as late as 12 years old. (As is the case of cow number 604 at bell farm, off Well Lane, just outside Hull. which was the farm that I worked on. She has twins 712 & 713, 713 had a calf who I nicknames 'Daisy' & she had twins. Sorry a differant story!)

Anyway because of the issu of BSE (Mad Cow deisese) any cows who are older than 8 years old when they die their bodies have to be incinerated to stop their remains from getting into the human food chain.

I hope that my answer helps.

  9. hamburger

  10. The term for the type of cow you describe is "Cull Cow". Almost all of the dairy farmers I know have the cull cows slaughtered for meat. It's not a high quality meat, beacuse the cow is usually about six years old (our high quality steaks come from beef steers that are 15-17 months old), so most of the cull cow meat is ground for hamburger, hot dogs, bologna, etc.

  11. some get slaughtered

  12. I am not sure the place from the question asked. In case it is from India there are many ways the first they send them to temples and feeding them till death, second they are used for pulling village cart for transportation of agriculture seed and the necessary items, thir in some cities they just let off freely and runaround and eat the waste thrown from the houses and in some places  they are sent to salughter house the skin used for winter clothing and the meat for hotels used as good non veg., food. and the horns are used for making antiques. If this question is from another country I need the details to throw light on that particular country nwhat ever I know.

  13. for sale, for slaughter, for reproduction

  14. slaughtered thats where they all end up they are not kept to be mothers to calves as dairy cows are never used for this their calves are taken from them at birth and raised on a bottle by humans if the dairy animal is not fit for human consuption they will be used in dog food

  15. They become hamburger. There is no retirement home for non producing dairy cows.
