Daisy Devine still stands out in a tough field of 10 in the Churchill Distaff Turf
On a four race win streak, including a grade 3 and a grade 1, Daisy Devine, the 4-year-old filly will be going for her fifth win on the trot when she takes on a solid field of 10 female turf specialists in the Grade 2 Churchill Distaff Turf over a distance of 1 mile on a Churchill Downs card which will be highlighted by the Grade 1 Kentucky Derby.
The Churchill Distaff Turf is the eighth race for 4-year-old and above fillies and mares, and while there will be some serious talent on display on the day, Daisy Devine stands out from the rest after her perfect 4 of 4 in her last four races.
Winner of the Grade 2 Fair Grounds Oaks last year, her winning streak started at the backend of the 2011 season, where she started off with a win in the Grade 3 Valley View Stakes.
It was a filly reborn, because she was tried on dirt throughout her career prior to the Valley View Stakes, but the minute she has turf under her feet, she became invincible, which made clear to her connections that turf is her sanctuary.
Trained by Andrew McKeever for owner James M. Miller, Daisy Devine won the 1 1/16 mile event at Keeneland turf course defeating Bizzy Caroline in second place and In Step finished third.
The 4-year-old Kafwain filly, was cut back in distance to a mile at Fair Grounds Race Course when she ran in the Pago Hop Stakes. She won it with ease defeating Ruthenia and Poof Too in second and third, respectively, while covering the distance in 1 minute and 39.11 seconds.
Mardi Gras Stakes was the hat-trick win and her seasonal debut at about 1 1/16 miles staying at Fair Grounds Race Course, as she completed the distance in 1 minute and 47.19 seconds on 21 February, 2012.
Out of Devil’s Bag mare Devil’s Dispute, Daisy Devine bagged her first grade 1 race in her recent start, the Grade 1 Jenny Wiley Stakes at Keeneland, defeating the likes of Bay To Bay in second and Tapitsfly in third in 1 minute and 43.21 seconds.
