Dale Murphy pleased with overwhelming support for Hall of Fame induction- MLB News
Dale Murphy is yet again up for the Hall of Fame vote and though he is mentally prepared for another disappointment, he is overwhelmed by the support he has recently received. Dale was up for a vote in 1999, the first year he was eligible for it.
It is baffling not to see Murphy already in Cooperstown and is one of three players with multiple MVP wins who have not made it to the Hall of Fame. He won the National League MVP on two separate occasions and was a shining star in the Atlanta Braves during
his long stint with the ball club.
He did have some playing time with Philadelphia Phillies and Colorado Rockies but nothing came close to his 15-season-long association with the Braves.
The 56-year-old has received tremendous support from his kids as well as loyal fans and said that he cannot describe his emotions in words.
"It's just an emotional and tender feeling of what the kids have put together in their efforts. They've just gone the extra mile for me. 'Thanks' does not sound like the adequate word," Dale said.
Murphy is up for the vote for 15h and final time. He has never received more than 23 percent of the votes, and will require 75 percent to be inducted. During his playing days, many thought that he will be an instant inductee once he was eligible.
He himself is a bit surprised at the exclusion and more so, on the small amounts of vote he has been receiving. Murphy has been disappointed by the lack of support he has received in the balloting. He did say that he was pleased that he did receive support
from many at the same time.
"I thought I would get a higher percentage than I have over the years," he said. "To be honest with you, that has been a little disappointing. But don't misunderstand the word 'disappointing.' To be on the ballot and be considered and to have people be very
supportive, that's a tremendous feeling."
The 56-year-old said that his kids motivated him to be more aggressive in his stance on the issue and speak about it. He said that he is not the one to blow his own trumpet.
"The kids know it's been a little uncomfortable for me to toot my own horn," Murphy said.
Dale Murphy had some tremendous performances in the Majors and was a bright star in an Atlanta Braves team that struggled during his era. He is known to be a player from the clean era, prior to the performance enhancing drugs scandals rocking the baseball
community.
One hopes that this great baseball player gets his name inducted to the Hall of Fame, an honour he thoroughly deserves after a long service to the game.
